Responsible Citizen
by Mary Graham Clark
Mary Graham Clark died February 16, 1999, at age 87. She had
been quite active in family, church, civic and social life, professionally
a university librarian. In her last three years she was one of
the Iowa City Press-Citizen Writers Group. Her 38 published
opinion columns and other writings are in the Iowa Women's Archive
at the University of Iowa. Expressing her lifetime philosophy
with lasting impact far beyond the pages of the newspaper in
the "great conversation" of public affairs, Mary's
perspectives on peace, simplicity, and environmental stewardship
often are recalled in her weekly prayer group at West Branch
Friends Church and in other circles. Now her columns are being
published by her husband Franklin and their children. The book
includes a foreword by Franklin and passages by Mary from their
joint autobiography Whence and Whither (1986). The title
of the new collection is from the closing words in her autobiography:
"I have become a responsible citizen." (Soft cover,
100 pages. ISBN applied for. $10 plus postage.)
